Thank you for reaching out to us. If you are referring to the smaller cast iron grill by Lodge that has the small plastic leg stand and grilling grate on top, we have not personally tested that exact model with our mat. I would check how far the direct heat source is from the ground and also the temperature of the legs. If the leg base is plastic and does not heat up directly and the distance is at least 4 inches, then it should be fine. If the bottom base of the grill gets extremely hot and is very close to the mat (less than 4 inches) it may over the course of an hour or more start to damage and discolor the top layer of the mat. If you have a moment, check the distance on the legs and see if the direct heat source is 4 inches or more away. We have tested larger fire pits where the distance is closer to the mat (2.5-3.5 inches) with no issue, but every grill is different so it is hard to give a blanket response on distance. To keep it safe, we still recommend 5-6 inches despite out mat being more robust. In the worst case scenario, if the grill can be somewhat lifted to be 4 inches above the mat, you will be ok. Also, check the diameter. Our main mat is 36 inches in diameter. I am not sure how large your grill is. We have a 24 inch size coming in the next couple months which may be a better size if your grill is smaller.

Thank you for your inquiry. You are correct about the operating temperature of fiberglass at 1000F. This is a somewhat highly technical question, which is often hard to explain on our listing with the limited space we are provided and for the average shopper. The composition of the fiberglass fabric in our mat is over 54% silica. That being said, when we are referring to temperatures well above 1000F, we are talking about instant temperatures. For example, when a burning log or the hottest ember falls out of the fire pit on to our mat. These can very much reach temperatures of well over 1000F. In this situation, most other fire pit mats cannot withstand that temperature even for a short period of time and the grass/deck/patio underneath will surely be damaged. Our mat however has those extra layers and extra thickness which dramatically slow the transfer of the heat to the surface underneath. We do our best to explain that in our listing with the limited space we have. For example, when we dropped the hottest embers directly onto our mat (please remember this is not what this mat is meant for and these were only for our many tests), it took nearly 2 minutes until we could feel the increased temperature underneath our mat. Conversely, the intense damaging heat on the surface beneath was instantaneous measured with other mats. If that highly intense temperature is left on our mat for longer periods of time then yes it will eventually damage the surface underneath and our mat also will be damaged mainly on the top layer. For the intended use of the mat, we still recommend that the direct heat source be a good 4-5 inches from the mat. When an intense instant heat situation (1500F-1800F) does occur, you do have some time to grab your tongs and remove the ember before the ground is damaged. Yes. Our firepit mat will work great for a chiminea as well as many other types of ovens, smokers and cast iron stove types. So long as there is at least a 4-5 inches of distance from the direct heat source to the mat it will be fine. Since most chimineas have some sort of 4-5 inch leg stand, table, or a base between the heat source the ground, the fire pit mat should work great.
